ABOUT US

We're a small breeder located in southeastern Pennsylvania dedicated to providing sound, quality, AKC-registered Labrador retrievers ideally suited to hunting, working, sporting, and family life.

Our focus isn't as much on show conformation, though we watch for and breed to correct conformation faults; instead we focus on hunting and retrieving instincts, field and agility strengths, people-pleasing orientation, easy-going nature, intelligence, trainability, and family-friendly temperament. You'll find that our dogs possess strong retrieving instincts, high learning aptitude, athleticism, and loving, loyal natures.

Pups from Stoney Ridge make great aid dogs, hunting dogs, working dogs, service dogs, agility dogs, and companions.

We are not a "backyard breeder" attempting to breed dogs for profit. Any responsible breeder or anyone who's done his research knows that breeding Labs isn't a money-making endeavor when done properly and on a small scale. We've invested in quality dogs with multi-generational field pedigrees for breeding. We limit our dams to one litter every OTHER heat cycle (at a minimum, sometimes every other year, for a max of three litters per dam) to protect their health and vitality. We invest in thorough, preventative medical care for our dogs and for all litters. We provide only the best foods and supplements to ensure dam and litter health. And we invest hours and hours and hours of attention, training, stimulation, and socialization in our litters to ensure you're getting the best of what the Lab breed has to offer.

Dog used in our breeding program have been appropriately screened and certified (OFA for hips and elbows, CERF for eyes, recorded at CHIC), and our puppies are guaranteed against hereditary disease or defect. If a pup you purchase from us develops a veterinarian-verified hereditary disease or defect through their first two years of life, you can return the pup for a full refund or for a new pup from the next available litter.

We are also committed to our dogs for life
. If at any time in the future (even beyond the first two years) for any reason (allergies, relocation, housing change, personal crisis, etc.), you must give up a dog purchased from us, we ask you to agree to return the dog to us -- even years down the road. We'll gladly take any of our dogs back to find them suitable, appropriate placement. And if we can't place a dog, we'll keep him/her here at Stoney Ridge.

At no time do we want our dogs to end up in dog pounds, shelters, rescues, or on the streets.

ABOUT LABORADOR RETRIEVERS

Here are some basics to consider to help you make a wise choice about getting a pup.

1. Before you commit to buying a pup (from us or any other breeder), read through the AKC's information page about buying/adopting a pup/dog. Consider questions like these:

  • Is this the right breed for me and my lifestyle?
  • Is this the right breeder?
  • Can I afford a dog? Can I afford this dog?
  • Do I have the right living situation and environment for this breed?

The AKC information page will walk you through these and other questions to help you make a wise, informed choice.

2. Consider these fast facts about the Lab temperament:

  • They're loving and loyal.
  • They are eager to please.
  • Labs are courageous, intelligent and easily trained.
  • Labs are gentle, non-aggressive, and obedient by nature.
  • They're fabulous with families and children.
  • They're very friendly, even with strangers.
  • They're curious, enthusiastic, and outgoing.
  • They're affectionate, crave attention, and need to know they're part of a family.
  • They crave human companionship.

3. Consider these fast facts about Lab traits and needs:

  • They are strong, active dogs of medium size (on average, about 65-80 lbs in weight, 21-24 inches tall).
  • They have a smooth, short-haired, easily groomed coat requiring little maintenance.
  • They shed, and they require regular brushing during shedding periods.
  • The need plenty of exercise (they are usually low energy dogs indoors, but high energy dogs outdoors).
  • They love to train, work, and play hard.
  • They love to swim. They have webbed toes and a waterproof coat.
  • They love the water and the outdoors.
  • They love to chew and will chew regularly for up to four years. We've had labs who gave up chewing at 18 months and others that gave it up at two years, and still others who were three-and-a-half or four before they finally completed their chewing phases. BUT if you train and supervise them well, give them plenty of attention, keep them safely confined when you can't supervise them, and provide plenty of appropriate chew toys, their chewing doesn't have to be destructive.
  • They need plenty of time and attention.
  • They are an ideal breed for any of the following:
    • working (as guide dogs, aid dogs, sniiffer dogs, search & rescue, etc.)
    • hunting & retrieving
    • training (good citizenship, agility, etc.)
    • providing love and companionship
    • fitting into and enhancing family life
